Open Space: GrownBoiTrap

“What if my baby’s like, ‘Damn, dad got face tats!’? And then my momma gonna cry. Yeah… Haitians don’t play about that.”

Welcome to the latest episode of “Open Space,” starring GrownBoiTrap.

It’s 2017, so it’s understandable if you didn’t feel safe assuming that the moniker “GrownBoiTrap” is simply about being grown and trapping.

“I’m a grown-ass man. I trap. I’m fly. Yeah, GrownBoiTrap,” says the latest artist to pop out of the SoundCloud hotbed of Palm Beach. The response to his tongue-in-cheek remix of Fetty Wap’s “My Way” nudged GBT from just having fun with it to actually pursuing a career. “After that,” he says, “I came in with my own sound.” He’s currently enjoying a healthy start to a buzzing career, thanks to booming cuts like “Jit” and “Hunnid Bands,” which have generated over 100,000 and 400,000 streams on SoundCloud, respectively, as well as the 2016 standout “SKRT SKRT.”

In his Open Space interview, GBT recalls his come-up in Palm Beach, crossing paths with most of the future stars in the city—folks like Ski Mask the Slump God, XXXTentacion and WifisFuneral. He also recalls being signed “by mistake” by Steven Victor, the current EVP at Def Jam and former SVP of A&R at Republic Records, who brought Ski Mask to Republic during his tenure there. “I was just in the studio, literally, just minding my business, just chilling. And Steven came, and he was like, ‘Let me hear some music.’”

Going forward look for GBT to make good on his potential. And to make sure the tattoo artist stays clear of his face. Check the video up top.
