Though Republic Records quietly revealed late in November that Post Malone’s Beerbongs & Bentleys album did not have a confirmed release date, Posty fans everywhere were left disappointed yesterday when the album, which Post recently promised would be out on Friday, December 1, didn’t drop. In a tweet Friday night, the Dallas native briefly touched on why Beerbongs & Bentleys was missing from all the new music pages yesterday.
“Hey guys, I know you guys were expecting a project today, it won’t be dropping for a little while,” reads Post’s tweet. “Sorry to let you down, but I need to make sure this album is perfect for you. I’m gonna keep working my ass off to make the best fucking album ever. I love ya.”
Though his “rockstar” single, which features 21 Savage, has enjoyed six non-consecutive weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100, it hasn’t been the easiest of fourth quarters for Post Malone. After making a couple generalized critiques about the state of hip hop to a Polish media outlet, Malone was derided on social media by droves of hip hop fans, setting off a rippling controversy that dominated headlines for a week last month. Not long after footage of his interview in Poland surfaced, Malone clarified his comments. But for much of the fallout, it was too little, too late—at least in the court of public opinion.
When Beerbongs & Bentleys does arrive—its release date is still TBD—expect another bevy of the artist’s patented trap croons for the Hot 100 to choose from. His debut, last year’s Stoney, appeared to be received lukewarmly initially, but proved to have significant staying power, spurring the success of “Congratulations,” one of the most popular hip hop hits of 2017. Already, his sophomore run has a chart-topper on its resume.
