Cardi B, arguably the Queen of the Rap Game, is living her best life.
Last week, she became the first woman to have three singles concurrently in the top ten on Billboard‘s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, and also recently became engaged to Offset, with whom she’s planning a blood-red wedding.
But it may be her rejection of the term “feminist” — a label media prognosticators and tastemakers seemed to placed on her unknowingly — that speaks best to why Cardi has proved so popular.
“You know what? I’m not even gonna consider myself nothing,” she tells New York. “Here’s the thing that bitches got me fucked up when it comes to that word. People think that being a feminist is a bitch that, like, went to school. They wear skirts all the way to their motherfucking ankles like a goddamn First Lady. That’s not being a feminist. Being a feminist is being equal to do what a man do. Niggas hustle, and I hustle niggas.”
For many, feminism is a tricky subject, one they aren’t comfortable talking about. And that’s fine, you don’t have to talk about it, but we should all understand it and value it. Cardi B manages to take something that to many is a complicated and misunderstood idea, and simplifies in way that we all can and should understand: just fucking treat everyone, especially women, equal and with respect and dignity.
This isn’t Cardi B’s first time sharing her philosophies on something that shouldn’t be so nuanced and looked down upon. She shared the same sentiment with her millions of Instagram followers last November.
“If you believe in equal rights of men and a woman, that makes you a feminist,” she said. “I don’t understand how you bitches feel like being feminist is a woman that have an education, that have a degree. That is not being a feminist. You discouraging a certain type of woman — that definitely doesn’t make you one. Some bitches wanna act like you need to read a book about feminists. No you do not…. you do not have to be a woman like me for me to encourage and support you, and tell you, yes bitch, keep on going, that’s why you fucking matter.”
