Brianna Brochu, a white freshman at the University of Hartford, has been kicked out of the school for, among many things, rubbing a used tampon over her black roommate’s belongings. Brochu is also facing criminal charges for her actions against Chennel “Jazzy” Rowe.
University President Greg Woodward issued a statement explaining the school’s decision:
There has been an outpouring of concern for the victim of these acts from across the University and the country. In my meeting with her yesterday, I reiterated my personal commitment to ensuring she has all available personal and academic resources the University can provide. It is clear there is work to be done at our University to ensure that all students feel safe, respected, and valued.
The drama between the two has apparently began the first day they met each other. “I kind of felt unwanted and she was giving off vibes,” Chennel told Fox 61.
According to The Root, Brochu ran a campaign of terror against Rowe in an effort to get her to move out. In an Instagram post she wrote, “Finally did it yo girl got rid of her roommate!! After 1 1/2 month of spitting in her coconut oil, putting moldy clam dip in her lotions, rubbing used tampons [on] her backpack, putting her toothbrush places where the sun doesn’t shine and so much more I can finally say goodbye Jamaican Barbie.”
Rowe says she made numerous complaints to the school about Brochu and that Brochu’s actions quite literally made her ill. In a Facebook video she explained, “While I’ve been here, I’ve been getting sick. Not knowing why, I’ve been getting sick. It started with throat pain. I thought maybe because it’s colder up here, I’m just probably catching a cold. The sore throat pain got worse and it was just throat pain. And this was happening for about a month. It got to the point where I had extreme throat pain where I couldn’t sleep, to the point where I couldn’t speak. Like, I’d try to whisper and I could barely whisper.”
Rowe also took to social media to vent about her roommate.

The school has come under fire for not handling the accusations in a timely fashion. Prior to Brochu being booted from the school, the hashtag #JusticeForJazzy sprouted up on social media.
And while the justice may have come late, it does appear that it was eventually served, at least to an extent. And for the rest of Brochu’s life, her search results will include the part of her life when she was a racist who smeared her used tampons over a girl’s belongings whom she called a “Jamaican barbie.”
